Glover/Curwen hand signs are a widely used instructional strategy within elementary general music. However, there are mixed results regarding their impact on vocal accuracy. The purpose of this study was to explore student perception of hand signs usage in the elementary music classrooms. Interviews with second- and third-grade students highlighted challenges and benefits of hand sign usage, and I explored influential factors surrounding hand sign use. When designing instruction, it is important for elementary music educators to consider the impact of instructional strategies on learning goals and student outcomes.
