Sat, April 10, 9:30 to 10:30am EDT (9:30 to 10:30am EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Qualitative Research Roundtable Sessions

Abstract

Background: Qualitative Research on Teaching in Physical Education (QL-RTPE) has grown over the past few decades. Knowing the trends and habitus of this work can provide an overview of the field. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to examine the habitus of QL-RTPE. Theory: We draw on Bourdieu’s theory of practice, and in particular the concepts of habitus, field, and capital. Methods: We conducted a systematic analysis of QL-RTPE of 362 total manuscripts. Articles were coded independently for numerous aspects of the research. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics. They were then interpreted using Bourdieu’s theory. Results: There are several patterns related to regions, journals, and methods worth deconstructing in QL-RTPE that privilege some research over others.
