Concerted Cultivation and Music Education: Parents' Arts Consumption and Children's Musical Education

Abstract

This study sought to examine the association between parental attendance at live musical performances and whether or not their children participated in school-based or out-of-school music and arts educational programs. Using data from the 2017 Survey of Public Participation in the Arts, we investigated to what extent parental attendance at any live music event within the past twelve months is related to the likelihood that a school-aged child would be involved in in-school or out-of-school music or arts instruction. Findings suggest that there is a significant increase in a child’s likelihood of participating in music or arts programs if their parents attend live music concerts, if their parents have at least a high school diploma, or identify as white.
