In Event: Critical Examination of Race, Ethnicity, Class, and Gender in Education: Special Education
Culturally and linguistically diverse students with disabilities continue to experience greater isolation and discrimination not only because of their disability, but because of the color of their skin, language, and culture. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore Black and Latinx parents’ perspectives of the special education process and to elucidate the challenges, barriers, and successes of their journey. Data was collected using individual interviews, journals, and focus groups. Results revealed that parents were not treated as equal partners in their child’s education. Additionally, educators lacked cultural competence to adequately support students and their families. Issues of race, language, and disability demands continuous attention until all students recieve equitable learning opportunities and experience improved outcomes.
