Rural students’ college choice is understudied in comparison to their more-urban peers and they attend college at lower rates. This qualitative study examines a key part of the school context for rural students. Rural guidance counselors know their students by more than their names and care about their futures. We examine the attitudes and role of school counselors in helping students plan for their life after high school and the conflict they experience in encouraging students to dream for a college degree by taking them on college tours yet do so within their own limited vision.
