A large deal of the literature on mixed-methods (MM) research discusses MM research designs. These attempts to capture MM research designs conceptually have been very helpful in proliferating the idea of MM research and making it somewhat easier to get started to use MM research. However, being conceptually derived, they remain abstract, which may limit their usefulness and impact. We use a novel approach to construct MM designs empirical in a specific field. This roundtable discussion will present the data and highlight parallels to previous approaches to gauge MM research designs. We hope to invoke a in-depth discussion of how the approaches add to each other and how the empirical-derived designs generated using network methods can further inform MM research.
