Rural Cultural Wealth and Education

Thu, April 8, 1:00 to 2:00pm EDT (1:00 to 2:00pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Rural Education Roundtable Sessions

Abstract

Building on scholars disavowing deficit-oriented, pathological approaches to educational research and calling for empowering, transgressive knowledge, we apply this approach to rural communities. Given our interdisciplinary research and advocacy, we propose a novel conceptual framework for scholars to use to ground rural research and education practice. Building upon Community Cultural Wealth and Identity Capital constructs, the Rural Cultural Wealth conceptual framework is an asset-based ideology which acknowledges the strengths and resiliency of rural people.
