Self-Policing to Protect Black Women: How Stereotype Threat Impacts Black Women's Responses to Gendered-Racial Microaggressions

Sat, April 10, 2:30 to 4:00pm EDT (2:30 to 4:00pm EDT), Division J, Division J - Section 2b Paper and Symposium Sessions

Abstract

This study examined how Black female graduate students respond to gendered-racial microaggressions. Using Critical Race Theory as a framework, this study also explored the social and psychological factors that contribute to their responses. Data suggest that their responses are influenced by stereotype threat and a fear of perpetuating the negative stereotypes of Black women.
