Drawing from an ethnographic investigation of a racially & culturally-diverse cohort of urban secondary ELA teachers, and building upon Banks’ model for multicultural content integration, this paper outlines the different levels of “Hip-hop Literacy Education”. Wary of hip-hop pedagogy’s “commercialization” and the fear that comes with depoliticizing hip-hop culture and pedagogy to make it more “user-friendly”, study findings are salient to the 2021 AERA Annual Meeting theme as the research works to take responsibility for the inadequate preparation of educators to deliver culturally relevant hip-hop based curriculum and instruction.
