Sat, April 10, 4:10 to 5:40pm EDT (4:10 to 5:40pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Technology, Instruction, Cognition & Learning Poster Sessions

Abstract

This study aimed to review the emerging literature on the use of HMD-based VR in language education to uncover trends and inform practice and future research in this area. Key findings include: (a) there has been a growing interest in investigating the use of in language learning, but it is difficult for teachers without programming skills to create interactive VR learning environments to fit learners’ needs, (b) reporting on designing and using VR learning environments based on second language acquisition theories is needed, (c) sample groups in studies are mostly limited to adult learners, and (d) the effects of immersive VR on language learning outcomes show potential but still inconclusive. The study also discusses implications for future research.
