The purpose of this research was to examine the competencies of instructional design professionals using job announcements as the source of data. A total of 1,030 job announcements were extracted, coded, and analyzed using an existing framework based on the definition of the educational technology, and associated knowledge, skill, and ability statements. Using exploratory factor analysis, we identified factors for knowledge, skill, and ability domains, and described these factors using descriptive and inferential statistics. These findings have implications for instructional design professionals, employers who hire instructional designers, educational technology programs who prepare instructional designers for their future careers, and our professional associations that provide ongoing support and professional development experiences for our nascent workforce.
