Activating Support for Students Experiencing Housing Insecurity

Fri, April 9, 4:10 to 5:40pm EDT (4:10 to 5:40pm EDT), Division J, Division J - Section 2a Paper and Symposium Sessions

Abstract

To better understand how housing insecurity is experienced by college students and the support needed to mitigate housing affordability and safety challenges, this study examined the experiences of undergraduate students at a four-year institution. Qualitative interviews with four undergraduate postsecondary students revealed the importance of peer social networks to reduce stigma, isolation, and increase help-seeking behaviors. Implications for future practice include establishing student partnerships to increase visibility and trust in campus resources and service utilization.
