Techno-Ethics, Twitter, and Scholarly Practices: Opportunities for Emerging Scholars to Learn Through Social Media

Sat, April 10, 9:30 to 10:30am EDT (9:30 to 10:30am EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Technology, Instruction, Cognition & Learning Poster Sessions

Abstract

As a result of conceptual mapping of the field of social media and education research, in the past decade researchers have made important contributions to the field. In education, scholars have proposed the importance of technoethics, the “legal, ethical, and socially-responsible mis/uses of technology in educational contexts.” Seeing these practices as converging around the notion of ethics in digital research methods invites inquiry into how and what scholars are learning about technoethics in, and with, Twitter. This qualitative case study reports findings from two participants, Tom and Brandon, who noted that one outcome of their Twitter use was gaining knowledge about the importance of techno-ethics, focused on Twitter-specific notions of privacy and data gathering.
