The principal leadership is essential to the sustainable development of the schools. Over the past decades, the schools are becoming multi-culturally and -linguistically diverse. There is an essential need of highly qualified school leaders in schools with large populations of English Learners (ELs). In this qualitative study, we aim to investigate bilingual/ESL teachers’ perceptions of school leadership, including principal competencies and challenges, in high-needs schools with ELs. Findings demonstrated that the successful school leaders need to possess a set of skills and knowledge to be able to promote school operation, sustain teaching and learning quality, and create a welcoming and collaborative environment.
