This paper shares the findings of a two-year qualitative study grounded in ethnography that has explored the degrees of languaging use and ownership of different communities that have turned to second language literacies as part of their establishment and growth. Our analysis recognizes how second languages in a Latin American city are helping create multiple grassroots communities that are fostering its ongoing reinvention as a plurilingual arena.
