Faculty Success Initiative: An Innovative Approach to Professional Faculty Onboarding and Development

Fri, April 9, 12:20 to 1:20pm EDT (12:20 to 1:20pm EDT), Division J, Division J - Section 4 Roundtable Sessions

Abstract

Higher education institutions have been increasingly dependent on adjunct faculty to provide instruction at undergraduate and graduate levels. At professional schools, most faculty begin teaching graduate courses with limited or no formal training or teaching experience as industry expertise is the primary requirement. Despite the availability of institutional resources in support of teaching, special attention should be paid to the socialization of these faculty as they transition into their academic role. This paper presents the outcomes of an onboarding project innovatively designed to provide quality, longer-term preparation to new business faculty, from their point of hire through the end of their first semester of instruction, to increase their teaching effectiveness and their sense of connection to their academic unit.
