Given inconclusive research on the effectiveness of private tutoring, the present study evaluates motivational effects of private tutoring on several motivational constructs in three subjects. Further, tutors’ behavior and students’ motivational preconditions are considered as potential moderators of motivational effects of private tutoring. Drawing on a large longitudinal data set, regression and path analyses revealed no general motivational effects of private tutoring, while the tutors’ use of an individual frame of reference when giving feedback was positively related with work habits in mathematics. Further, students’ internal motivation to attend private tutoring was positively and their external motivation was negatively linked with their work habits in mathematics.
