Leadership of Black, Male, Student-Athletes: High School Teachers' and Coaches' Beliefs and Behaviors

Thu, April 8, 3:00 to 4:00pm EDT (3:00 to 4:00pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Research Focus on Education and Sport Roundtable Sessions

Abstract

Despite their financial significance to billion dollar commercial and educational entities, Black, male, student-athletes in inner-city high schools (BMSAs) have the worst grades and the lowest test scores of all high school student-athletes in the country (Norwood, 2008, p. 27). Who is accountable for their academic success? Teachers and coaches were interviewed regarding their perceptions and beliefs about leadership of BMSAs. Within-case (1 teacher/1 coach) and cross-case (teachers vs. coaches) analyses were conducted to illuminate their perceptions, beliefs, and behaviors towards self and each other as leaders of BMSAs. Preliminary analyses indicate that teachers view leadership in political terms, while coaches insist that caring and attention are essential for developing a solid foundation upon which successful leader/follower relationships can thrive.
