Assessing team development helps interprofessional clinical teams improve collaborative practice, but a measure is needed for student teams engaged in interprofessional education (IPE). This study sought to refine the Team Development Measure (TDM), a tool designed for clinical settings, and adapt it for pre-clinical IPE. Exploratory factor analysis was used to examine internal structure; an item applicability survey was administered to examine content validity; student interviews provided evidence related to response process. Wording was revised for six items, and a seventh item was dropped, resulting in the TDM for IPE, which was piloted in 2020. Initial findings indicate that some concepts related to team development in the clinical workplace are similar in pre-clinical IPE, while others may not translate seamlessly.
