Prestige, Gentrification, or Altruism? University of Houston's Messaging Around a New Medical School

Abstract

In 2016, the University of Houston introduced the Third Ward Initiative to revitalize the historic neighborhood through 4 sectors, including health via a new medical school. A critical discourse analysis revealed findings indicating that UH used multiple narratives to frame the medical school: prestige-building for some stakeholders, altruism for others.
