Teacher and Student Perspectives on Dynamic Feedback and Scaffolding to Support Authentic Scientific Inquiry

Thu, April 8, 5:00 to 6:00pm EDT (5:00 to 6:00pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Advanced Technologies for Learning Poster Sessions

Abstract

Authentic scientific inquiry activities can give students a clear picture of the nature of science, but scaffolds are necessary for their successful implementation. Virtual environments can facilitate these activities by having built-in scaffolds, such as feedback that reacts dynamically to actions in real time. This paper documents a pilot implementation of such tools embedded in the open-ended virtual world of XYZ. This paper focuses on qualitative data collected from students and teachers involved in the study. Student feedback on the utility of the new feedback features is analyzed, and themes from teacher interviews are described to explore how they used the teacher-facing tools as well as how they saw students reacting to the additional tools.
