Relational Awareness as a Dimension of Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy: A Self-Study

Abstract

This paper addresses the following research question: How can relational awareness be integrated into culturally sustaining pedagogy (CSP) in higher education? Using a first-person/self-study action research approach, this paper examines my experience in designing and enacting an implementation of CSP in a graduate-level course. The self-study that grounds this paper responds directly to the question posed in the 2021 AERA Call for Submissions: “How can we individually and collectively demonstrate greater care about what happens in our society and in educational institutions?”
