This study seeks to understand how the Summit After-school Program provides the Ellicott Creek Elementary School students with the opportunity to develop social and academic confidence through activities that focus on literacy, linguistic skills, academic achievement, cultural knowledge, and play. Ethnographic data collection methods include a) classroom observations; b) field notes; c) researcher notes and/or audio recordings of interviews; and d) cognitive-communication assessment data from existing school records or classroom artifacts. Preliminary findings from the data suggest that the mix of activities, guided by faculty and volunteers, help students succeed socially and academically, and help Ellicott Creek as a school fulfill its potential to be a thriving place where diverse and international cultures contribute to its overall community health.
