For clarifying the learning needs that technology could satisfy in mathematics education, our review synthesized a total of 76 studies involving 54988 students from K-12 classrooms to examine the impact of different technology roles on mathematics achievement. Results from random-effects meta-analysis showed a statistically significant and positive effect of technology (ḡ = 0.23) on students’ mathematics achievement. Of six different technology roles, the largest significant effect was found when using technology as a collaborative and communicative environment (ḡ = 0.49), following by using technology to provide supports for problem-solving (ḡ = 0.39), conceptual development (ḡ = 0.31), and adaptive mathematics practice (ḡ = 0.28). Furthermore, the technology influence on students’ mathematics achievement significantly varied based on other study features.
