Abstract

This paper reports on a study which is part of a larger project to improve Dual Language Bilingual Education (DLBE) teachers' instruction for English language learners (ELLs) in elementary schools in Indiana. We compared the instructional practices of two groups: (a) 7 DLBE teachers who received an 18-month teacher training via online coursework leading to ELL licensure and a DLBE certificate coupled with instructional coaching; and (b) 6 non-DLBE teachers who did not receive any treatment during the same period. We analyzed the video recordings of four observations of each teacher's English language arts lessons using the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP). The findings show the difference between the two groups' instruction and how the treatment group's instruction improved.
