Theoretical frameworks are seldom used in mixed methods research. A review of published mixed methods studies 2004-2010 showed that only 28 used such a lens to guide research design. Using a theoretical framework may improve integration between qualitative and quantitative data, strengthen decision-making within the research process, and guide future mixed methods researchers in their own studies. In this paper, we demonstrate the use of a theoretical framework as a tool for completing a mixed methods study. Through the use of metaphors and figures, we explicitly demonstrate the benefit of using a theoretical framework in mixed methods research.
