Examining Current Data Practices in Science Education: A Systematic Review

Thu, April 8, 1:00 to 2:00pm EDT (1:00 to 2:00pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Science Teaching and Learning Roundtable Sessions

Abstract

Data science is quickly emerging as a powerful field and data literacy has been identified as a twenty-first century skill. Scientific disciplines are rapidly evolving with the emergence of new computational technologies, and many are adopting techniques of data science to conduct the scientific enterprise. Accordingly, scientific data literacy is gaining importance in the scientific toolkit. Little is currently known about how scientific data literacy can be taught or assessed. To address this gap, this study examines the recent literature on data practices in scientific inquiry to identify their efforts to support students in engaging with diverse data practices in science education. We also discuss the critical data practices that support students in developing scientific data literacy.
