A case study of McNair Program participants was conducted in rural Appalachia to critically examine the nexus of student class and geographical backgrounds, academic capital formation, and institutional responsibility. This manuscript presents findings related to student narratives of their educational trajectories. Preliminary results indicate students express an awareness that their backgrounds play a role in their ability to engage educational structures.
