Pipeline Study: Reexamining the Teacher Preparation Program Admission Process

Fri, April 9, 4:10 to 5:40pm EDT (4:10 to 5:40pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Research Use Paper and Symposium Sessions

Abstract

The teacher shortage has been a great concern in the context of providing K-12 students quality instruction and a stable learning experience. The awareness of social justice and equity demands the Teacher Preparation Programs admit and prepare the viable candidates who not only reflect the diverse student populations in public schools they are about to serve but also can survive and thrive in the early teaching careers. This action research describes how a TPP examines its application process to identify the roadblocks that might derail prospective applicants’ resolve of becoming a teacher. The findings were triangulated from the surveys, a focus group interview and a review of the extant literature, including the state mandates.
