In recent years, there has been an increased interest in the creation of meaningful, real-time interventions within learning analytics research. In this session, we present research conducted with 6th grade students in a biology course. We use student log data from a computer supported collaborative learning environment to determine patters in student utilization of different chat, collaboration, and inquiry tools. Results suggests that there are distinct different patterns of utilization of different tools, and that student’s utilization of complex collaborative tools are the best indicators of advanced sense-making. Suggestions for how these patterns could be used to enable teachers to perform real-time learning interventions are presented.
