Abstract

William S. Gosset is best known for “Student’s t” but this misses the larger work he actually accomplished. This proposal provides a glimpse of the reasoning processes of William S. Gosset as he moved to improve the quality and consistency of Guinness Beer. This proposal is an archival study using primary documents housed in the Guinness Archives (Diageo, St. James Gate, Dublin). A report from 1910 forms the core data for the proposal, but his correspondence with individuals across the world highlight his abductive reasoning and creativity.
