This study explores entry-level elementary education college students civic education ideologies using Q methodology. The study asked students to sort previously developed survey items measuring ideology into a bell-curve shaped ranging from agree to disagree. The analysis found four patterns among students, which we labeled as critical, multiculturalist, nationalist, neoliberal, and institutionalist. A lesson was developed where participants completed the q-sort and studied how their beliefs could influence their instructional practices and classroom discussions. Following the lesson, students completed a written reflection. Students expressed that the experience developed a deeper understanding of their beliefs and the diversity of their classmates. This study demonstrates the utility of Q methodology as a research method as well as instructional tool.
