Research suggests a beneficial role of positive socioemotional interactions for group outcomes. However, research has investigated climate during on-task activity, without considering their benefits during off-task exchanges, such as alleviating tension, the aim of the current study. Quality ratings were assigned for 7 5-minute videotaped collaborative interactions during STEM disciplinary activity, selected for observed behavioral disengagement and positive socioemotional engagement. Collaborative tensions were identified for all groups, with task standards the most common obstacle preceding a shift off-task. Groups prioritized good-natured interactions over resolving conflict; thus, positive off-task socioemotional interactions were insufficient a resource to navigate these collaborative challenges. Groups may have been unwilling to risk their positive peer interactions or did not have the requisite collaboration and conflict-resolution strategies.
