While scholars recognize the importance of positive teacher-student relationships, and some point out specific behaviors and practices that can encourage such relationships, scholarship discussing the relational stages that lead to genuine relationships is often neglected. Relational realms, the conceptual framework we propose, is an analytical tool that offers context for the exploration of positive teacher-student relationship building. It is rooted in the contention that teacher-student relationships consist of various internal and external ways of knowing and being that constantly and interactively release and retrieve energy which, when acknowledged and worked through, can result in authentic relationships that produce more effective teachers and maximize student outcomes.
