This study examined whether and to what extent the specialized content knowledge of concrete models was helpful for pre-service teachers to improve their content knowledge, satisfaction with mathematics content and enjoyment in teaching. Participants were pre-service teachers enrolled in a mathematics methods course that emphasized the specialized content knowledge of using concrete models for teaching. The study found that specialized content knowledge contributed to improving pre-service teachers’ common content knowledge. Secondly, while the specialized content knowledge development did not directly develop their satisfaction with mathematics content, it marginally improved their teaching enjoyment. Further analyses using larger data set will be conducted. Implications were discussed.
