Responsive Librarianship Programming for Adolescent Mental Health Literacy Education

Thu, April 8, 5:00 to 6:00pm EDT (5:00 to 6:00pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Adolescence and Youth Development Poster Sessions

Abstract

This presentation features programming using graphic medicine materials and creative writing for increasing adolescents’ mental health literacy. Graphic medicine uses visual narratives depicting experiences of having, caring for someone else with, or treating an illness. The project was implemented through a grant from the National Library of Medicine for mental health literacy instruction for pediatric patients in a behavioral health center in Florida. This program was developed and implemented by a team of researchers from the University of South Florida School of Information’s Responsive Librarianship Lab. Responsive librarianship is a data-driven research scheme dedicated to the delivery of personalized library services responding to individuals’ mental health concerns. Future projects will involve partnerships with public libraries to reach a wider audience.
