Burnout has adverse effects on medical students that can follow them into their early careers. Recent research demonstrates that a commonly used measure of medical student burnout does not function as expected. To address this issue, this study documents the development of a new measure of burnout for medical students. A rapid review was conducted to inform the development of a preliminary set of items. Subject matter experts then provided feedback on these items by completing a web-based survey and participating in virtual focus groups. This process resulted in a new measure of burnout tailored to medical students that may help to understand the causes and consequences of burnout and develop targeted interventions within this population.
