In the presentation, we share the findings from a study of the impact of engagements intended to create purposeful tensions to support teacher identity development. Teacher candidates reflected on and discussed real dilemmas practicing teachers have faced. The findings showcase the affordances of the classroom engagements. They show the TCs felt assured and aware of possible situations they may experience as early career teachers. It is also important to note they recognized and talked about their apprehension in a safe classroom community. This study expands the literature by focusing on how creating purposeful tensions, like the SS engagements, can support TCs’ identity development.
