This study examined the effect of the use of Facebook discussion activities, utilizing the CoI framework, on the speaking performances of undergraduate students in an EFL speaking class in Bangladesh. The study utilized an embedded mixed method study design with quantitative data being the main data source and qualitative data playing a supportive role. Through a quasi-experimental design, the quantitative data revealed a significant difference between the pre-test and post-test speaking scores for the treatment group, no such difference was found for the control group, nor between the post-test scores for the two groups . Student interview data helped explain these quantitative findings. The study has important implications for language course designers and instructors.
