This self-study explores three instructor perspectives on the design and implementation of an asynchronous, online playable case study (PCS) (Balzotti & Hansen, 2019). The context for the study was a graduate seminar and residency within a new Learning Experience Design certificate program. The seminar instructors took on roles within the PCS and played the case along with the students. Students utilized an online simulation interface to become professional learning experience designers and interact with faculty and other design team members (played by instructors) to navigate the design of a massive open online course. The findings solidify the importance of reflection within the process of teaching and learning through PCSs and embracing the performative and improvisational nature of playing a case.
