The Enactment of Courage by Black School Administrators in Predominately White School Districts

Mon, April 12, 2:50 to 4:20pm EDT (2:50 to 4:20pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Leadership for Social Justice Paper and Symposium Sessions

Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to identify how Black administrators developed courage and how they enacted it to fight against racism personally and professionally. My research questions are: 1) What contributed to the development of courage among early or first-hired Black education administrators who fought for racial justice? 2) How was courage enacted by these administrators? Interviews of 16 former administrators who were among the first to be hired in predominately White school districts were conducted. Four themes emerged from data analysis which ought to inform the practice of current and future school leaders.
