Preparing teachers through quality teacher professional development (TPD) is critical for improving the quality of education. Collaborative online technologies make involvement in online participatory TPD experiences increasingly possible. However, our understanding of effective online TPD instructional and design practices is still limited. This design case contributes by describing the structure and functionality of the Progressive Instructional Conversation (PIC) template intended to support design and instruction of online TPD courses grounded in sociocultural practices. The greatest insight from the process of designing the PIC template was recognizing the importance of attending to the underlying pedagogy and aligning it with affordances of available technology. Although specific to online TPD, this design case can inform instructional solutions in other content-areas and instructional contexts.
