Protecting Student Data? A Critical Analysis of the California Consumer Privacy Act

Fri, April 9, 4:10 to 5:10pm EDT (4:10 to 5:10pm EDT), Division L, Division L - Section 8 Poster Sessions

Abstract

The right to privacy is a basic human right, yet there is evidence that student data collected through schools using third-party educational technology applications are being exploited. This empirical content analysis will closely analyze the California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 (CCPA, 2018) to explore the extent to which the CCPA is protecting student privacy in higher education within California. Given the growth of educational technology since the covid-19 pandemic and the implications for increased misuse of student data, this paper aims to help educators become better informed and accept greater educational responsibility for protecting student privacy.
