Despite increased calls to incorporate data science education (DSE) into the K-12 curriculum, there have been fewer calls to attend to how DSE raises concerns about injustice, oppression, and dehumanization. In this paper, we develop a humanizing design framework for DSE that attends to issues of race, gender, and place and prioritizes the relationship between data and human selves. We apply our framework to a data literacy activity known as “What’s Going on in This Graph?” and highlight opportunities for promoting equity and social justice in DSE. Findings reveal different ways that power is present in educational design decisions and point to new possibilities for critiquing and redesigning materials and instructional approaches for teaching and learning data science.
