Science Teaching Efficacy Beliefs and Outcome Expectancy Among National Board–Certified Teachers

Mon, April 12, 9:30 to 11:00am EDT (9:30 to 11:00am EDT), Division K, Division K - Section 8 Paper and Symposium Sessions

Abstract

Research on the value of National Board certified (NBC) in science education is limited. The purpose of this work was to quantitatively evaluate the relationship between NBC and personal science teaching efficacy and beliefs (PSTEB) and science teaching outcome expectancy for students with above average (STOE_A) or below average (STOE_B) interest or performance. Multilevel modeling (MLM) was used to analyze PSTEB, STOE_A, and STOE_B from NBC and non-NBC, K to 12th-grade teachers with various years of experience. NBC teachers, regardless of experience or grade level, self-reported higher PSTEB and STOE_B compared to non-NBC teachers. Therefore, NBC may be valuable for influencing science teaching practices at all grade levels and maintaining high expectations of all students.
