Researchers find that educational games positively impact learning (Hainey et al., 2016), yet it remains unclear why (Ke, 2016). Scholars suggest play is the key construct for linking student’s cognition and emotion as they engage with educational games (Rieber et al., 1998). Thus, this study sought to better define and measure the construct of play in educational game environments. A survey instrument was created from a synthesis of literature and student interviews centered on defining play. This instrument was administered to elementary students (n=334) after playing a serious educational game. Cronbach’s alpha values and exploratory factor analysis supported instrument reliability. This instrument can be utilized to measure student experiences of play to better understand the impact of educational games.
