This proposal provides an overview of West Metropolitan Virtual Reality summer camp, which was developed and implemented to support Black middle school students’ creative processes while they engage in computer science related activities. The camp provided students the opportunity to create virtual environments based on their own experiences. As such, the camp design was guided by the culturally responsive computing framework to ensure students were enabled to bridge their personal and cultural experiences into their computing activities. The findings presented in this paper highlight the necessity for classrooms to employ a culturally responsive computing framework that includes students’ cultural and educational background into the curriculum design.
