Resisting White Supremacy in the Parent-Teacher Organization: How to Find Expansive Equality in Shared School Governance

Sun, April 11, 2:30 to 4:00pm EDT (2:30 to 4:00pm EDT), Division G, Division G - Section 4 Paper and Symposium Sessions

Abstract

In this paper I further develop and apply the theoretical construct still-restrictive, which builds off Crenshaw’s notions of expansive and restrictive anti-discrimination law. I found the notion of still-restrictive useful for making sense of how white supremacy can operate through liberal racial inclusion efforts focused on optics rather than substantive equality. This work draws from a critical race multicase study that centers the lived experiences of Black parents as they engaged in PTOs and African American Parent groups. The purpose of this paper is to offer educators practical implications and examples to help develop truly expansive visions of equality in family-school partnerships.
