Field-based practicum experiences are essential in connecting classroom theory to the real world. In this study, we analyzed the perceptions of principal candidates regarding their summer residency practicum experiences via virtual semi- structured interviews. Principal candidates expressed leadership growth in the following Texas Principal Competency areas: leading learning, human resource management, and strategic operations. The results of this study may assist in revamping principal preparation programs for a more meaningful residency practicum experience.
