Examining How Prominent Educational Psychology Journals Create and Resist Space for Understanding the Motivation of Students With Disabilities

Sun, April 11, 10:40am to 12:10pm EDT (10:40am to 12:10pm EDT), SIG Sessions, SIG-Motivation in Education Paper and Symposium Sessions

Abstract

We reviewed all manuscripts published in the top journals of educational psychology and the learning sciences since 2010 to examine the degree to which students with disabilities (SWD) were represented among the literature, with a particular focus on motivation. In our review, we catalogued manuscript topics and themes, whether SWD were explicitly excluded from an article's scope, whether authors distinguished between SWD and 'struggling learners,' or 'low achievers,' and the manuscript sections (e.g., literature review, limitations) in which information about SWD appeared. Implications for motivation researchers who aim to promote inclusivity and equity are discussed.
